Description
The NGL Recovery Unit is a key midstream gas processing step designed to recover valuable natural gas liquids (NGLs) such as ethane, propane, and heavier hydrocarbons from natural gas. In this process, the feed gas is cooled through heat exchangers and refrigeration, then expanded in a turbo-expander to achieve cryogenic temperatures that condense heavier hydrocarbons. The resulting two-phase stream enters a separator and demethanizer, where methane-rich residue gas is separated and routed to sales gas compression, while the liquid hydrocarbon stream is sent to downstream fractionation for further separation. Efficient NGL recovery improves gas heating value control, maximizes liquid product recovery, and enhances overall plant economics.
